Spirituality as the name suggests means forging a connection with the spirit. This concept is many times misapprehended. It means forging a connection with the spirit that is inside us. It is innately believed that a human life has three aspects physical, mental and spiritual. It is easier to understand the functioning of the body and the mind but it is difficult to get to the depth of the nature of the spirit. When a person reaches the highest level of spirituality, that person attains moksha or release from the sufferings of life and death.
Spirituality can be achieved by dedicatedly applying and following the teachings of a spiritual master or by meditation. Spiritual masters are those who have attained the above described state of moksha. The world has experienced the rising of many spiritual masters. Whenever such a master is born a spiritual revolution is bound to happen. Dalai Lama, the great Buddhist monk once said, "Rely on the teachings to evaluate a guru: Do not have blind faith, but also no blind criticism." A spiritual master does not pass the state of enlightenment however; initiate his followers on the path to enlightenment. Another world renowned spiritual master Osho explained that the biggest treasures in life are awareness, love, meditation and laughter. According to him the biggest beauty of life was in experiencing spiritual nirvana.
However meditation can also be a tool to experience spiritual freedom. There are many types of meditation techniques. They range from sitting in a comfortably in a crossed legged or lotus position with the feet resting on the reverse thighs, to staring vividly at a painting or graphical presentation with insistent geometrical figures. Other form of meditation also involves staring continuously at the candle flame or rising sun or chanting continuously some specific mantra or repeating a monosyllabic sound like om, lum or hum.
Transcendental meditation is also very popular. Simple and easy to understand, Transcendental Meditation can be done by all, and that too at anyplace including a bus, a plane, in the park, in the office or while sitting in your favorite chair. All you have to do is sit comfortably with the eyes closed for twenty minutes. Transcendental meditation has been known to have a greater affect on the whole being than was antecedently understood. It goes far beyond just making a laid back and unstrained attitude.
Spirituality is not something that is outside us, it is very much within, we just need to awaken it.
